I’m excited to share an interactive dashboard designed to let you explore comparative life history data across 32 primate species.

What does the app do?

The Primate Life History Explorer presents trait data from 32 species, allowing you to view and compare:

  • Age at weaning
  • Gestation length
  • Interbirth interval
  • Mating systems
  • Group size
  • and more

Each species page includes taxonomy, scientific names, and key ecological and social information.

Where does the data come from?

  • Life history traits:
    Harvey, P.H. & Clutton-Brock, T.H. 1985. Life History Variation in Primates. Evolution, 39(3), p.559.
    DOI: https://doi.org/10.2307/2408653
  • Mating systems:
Lindenfors, P. & Tullberg, B.S. 1998. Primate size evolution: the consequences of sexual selection. Biol. J. Linn. Soc., 64, pp. 413-447.
Kappeler, P.M. 1997. Intrasexual selection and testis size in strepsirhine primates. Behav. Ecol., 8, pp. 10-19.
  • Group size:
Barton, R.A. 1996. Neocortex size and behavioural ecology in primates. Proc. R. Soc. Lond. B Biol. Sci., 263, pp. 173-177.

Please note: data are based on older publications due to restricted access to updated sources. I plan to expand the dataset in the future, incorporating additional species and more detailed information as it becomes available.
